Japanese Iris はなしょぶ Hanashobu
Flower language: Blessings for believers; mysterious person
A purple immortal unstained by dust
Blades of grass green through winter and summer
Thousands of flowers and plants on Earth
None dare compare with its grace
This Japanese Iris is a wagashi classic . Japanese Iris is a variant of Iris in the Iridaceae family. The flowers stand upright and have an aristocratic air.
If cherry blossom is the flower of the commons in Japan, the iris is the flower of the nobles. Every June during the iris season at Meiji Jingu Palace, various colors of iris are reflected in the clear shallow water in the garden, ranging from deep purple to light purple to pink. Purple, dark blue, light blue, pure white, pink and white, you can see them all in a blur of flowers, especially in the afternoon after a rain, flowers freshened from their wash, with water droplets sparkling between the flowers and leaves. No wonder the Japanese put the irises on the 5,000-yen currency and regard it as a nationally- treasured flower.
