Taiwan Cotton Rose たいわんふよう Taiwan Fuyo
Alias: Thousand-Faced Beauty, Thrice-Drunken Hibiscus, Frost-Defying Flower
Flower language: courage, strength, perseverance, and romantic love
A plant endemic to Taiwan, and the guardian deity of the Tsou people of Alishan. Taiwan Cotton Rose is highly adaptable, surviving in barren or windy environments. It can be found along sunny roadsides, forest edges, streamsides, and coastlines throughout the island, serving as an inspiring symbol. Because it blooms after the Frost's Descent solar term (late autumn to early winter), it is also known as the "frost-defying flower." The flower changes color with time, temperature, and weather: white in bud, pink in full bloom, and purplish-red in withering, truly a "thousand-faced beauty."
Taiwan Cotton Rose has a wide range of uses. Its wood can be used to make clogs, and its fibrous bark can be woven into baskets or used as a substitute for rope. It is also a Taiwanese herbal medicine; its flowers are edible, and slices of its roots and stems are used in medicine for their anti-inflammatory effects.
