Three quatrains on heavy snow
(Song Dynasty) Su Che
Spring has come after the cold winter in my boudoir.
It's not pleasant when it's cold but warm.
The cold wind in the middle of the night drove the hail into flight,
Clear the street of dust a foot away.
The amount of snowfall in the north increases dramatically and accumulates, which can nourish overwintering plants, hence the saying "auspicious snow indicates a good harvest." Taiwan, located in the south, does not snow, and there must be clouds and rain during the Big Snow solar term. Taiwanese folk proverbs say "heavy snow without clouds means a famine year" and "heavy snow and rain mean good luck for sugarcane." The Big Snow solar term is not only related to the farming work of the coming year, it is also an important harvest period for agricultural and fishery products.
Although the snowfall is heavy at this time, it usually does not get really cold until after the winter solstice, so there is a saying among the people that "it's not cold on snowy days."
